Time to First Byte (TTFB) measures how long it takes for a browser to receive the first byte from your server. A slow TTFB delays everything else — and hurts your Core Web Vitals.
What causes a slow TTFB?
- Overloaded or low-quality hosting
- No page caching, so every page is built from scratch
- Slow database queries and heavy plugins
- Visitors far away from your server
How to fix it
- Enable full-page caching
- Upgrade to faster hosting with a modern PHP version
- Add object caching (Redis or Memcached) on busy sites
- Use a CDN
- Find and replace slow plugins
Aim for a TTFB under 0.8 seconds — under 0.3 seconds is excellent.
